Those are but the broad strokes, though, and the fine details of Kahlan’s life are somewhat more complicated as those things tend to be. Kahlan was born a Confessor, one of an order of magical women with the extraordinary power to use their touch to make someone love them so much that they would obey the Confessor’s every whim. The rise of Darken Rahl in D’Hara, however, made Confessors enemies of the state and they were hunted down and killed one by one, making Kahlan not only one of the strongest, but one of the last Confessors in the world. With her destiny always at the forefront of her mind, Kahlan and her sister, another Confessor, raced toward the magical boundary between their own home in the Midlands and the Westlands to find the Seeker and set prophecies into motion. Kahlan expected a warrior and instead found Richard Cypher: a simple woodcutter’s son. Richard’s naivete threw a wrench into well-laid plans and instead of being able to immediately confront Rahl, Kahlan and Zedd, a wizard, helped Richard hone his gifts while traveling across the Midlands providing aid to villages large and small. No task was too trivial for the Seeker and his Confessor, after all, and even if they weren’t making direct strikes at Rahl himself, they were winning the love and admiration of the people they hoped to liberate someday from tyranny. Along the way, Kahlan fell in love, and Richard with her, complicating things further still; a Confessor can never be with a man she truly loves, lest she confesses him and strips away all his autonomy. Tensions between Rahl and the pockets of resistance rallied by Kahlan and Richard reached a breaking point once they discovered one of Rahl’s wizards attempting to create his own Confessor through magic and the two of them are captured and tortured. Fearing not only for her own life, but that of Richard’s, Kahlan enters the Con Dar: a perversion of the Confessor’s love magic driven by rage and drives their captors to turn on one another until no man is left standing.
